Methanol Decomposition Technology Rejuvenates Beverage Bottles

Recently, a U.S. company adopted methanol decomposition technology to enable plastic beverage bottles to achieve true recycling.

Plastic soft containers used to hold beverages are mostly made of PET. Because they do not meet strict purification standards, they are not generally reusable for refilling beverages.

The American company first crushed the recycled plastic bottles into pieces, added methanol and heat-treated them to decompose them into the components of PET—dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol. Then, dimethyl terephthalate was rotated in a centrifuge for a long time to separate impurities, and ethylene glycol was purified by boiling. In the bottling plant, purified PET can be made from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol.

It is reported that Coca-Cola Company of the United States has begun to use containers containing such recycled plastic components.
