New research reveals the cause of drug resistance in a pathogen

Researchers in France and Japan recently discovered a gene involved in the development of resistance in Staphylococcus aureus and explored the expression mechanism of the gene.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen that can cause skin infections, endocarditis, acute pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and sepsis. Infection of such pathogens that produce multi-drug resistance to antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, has become a problem faced by the global medical and health community. Researchers have never understood the mechanism by which resistant Staphylococcus aureus acquires resistance genes.

Researchers from the Pasteur Institute in France, the National Research Center of France and the University of Tsukuba, Japan, reported in the American academic journal "Pathogen Volume of the Public Library of Science" that they discovered a gene called sigH in Staphylococcus aureus Expression enables the bacteria to initiate a mechanism to "introduce" special genes from other organisms and turn them into their own resistance genes.

In addition, the researchers also explored two expression mechanisms of the sigH gene. In the experiment, the researchers activated the sigH gene to make Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin.

The researchers believe that this discovery will help to develop new therapies to eliminate the resistance of this pathogen by inhibiting the expression of specific genes.
