New research confirms that embryonic stem cells can repair damaged arteries

Dr. John L. Vande Berg, Chief Scientist of Texas Biomedicine, said: "We first cultivate stem cells in a Petri dish under special conditions to differentiate them into precursors of vascular cells, and then will make them into Similar to the tubular and branched structure of blood vessels. "This discovery gave VandeBerg and his team confidence that they decided to carry out complex experiments to verify whether these cells can indeed repair damaged arteries. According to the researchers, they found in the study that these cells derived from embryonic stem cells were indeed able to repair the baboon arteries damaged by the experiment and were "expected to be used to repair damaged human blood vessels."

In the study, the researchers completely removed the inner wall surface cells in a section of the baboon artery, and then added cells derived from embryonic stem cells to the artery. The researchers then placed this segment of the artery in a bioreactor dedicated to the cultivation of nuclear tissue. The inside of the blood vessel is pumped with fluid through a pressure device to simulate blood flow, while being immersed in another fluid outside of the blood vessel to maintain cell positioning. Three days later, the complex structure of the inner surface of the blood vessel began to be regenerated inside the blood vessel. After 14 days, the inner wall of the blood vessel completely recovered to its natural state of maturity.

VandeBerg said that this treatment is of great significance to patients with heart disease due to coronary artery damage. This is where the real potential of stem cell regenerative medicine lies. In order to confirm that the artery will not repair itself without stem cells, the researchers conducted a comparative experiment, removing the inner wall cells of a section of the artery without adding stem cells, and then performing the same treatment. As a result, no self-repair phenomenon occurred.
