Japan's successful development of flexible materials

Professor Toshio Ichimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo in Tokyo and the Science and Technology Promotion Agency of Japan, has recently developed a new material that can be retracted and damaged like an eraser, and is suitable for making intraocular lenses and biomaterials.
According to the Nikkei Industry News, the researchers called this new material "GEL." This material is a semi-solid substance that is colorless and transparent. It is synthesized from a dextrin ring that is harmless to the human body and a high molecular weight polyethylene glycol. It is as elastic as an eraser. If it contains 80% of water, the volume can increase 8 times. Even if the volume expands to 1000 times, the network structure of the material will not be destroyed.
It is reported that since this material is in a semi-solid state, it is easy to make a model, and it can be turned into a desired shape after heating. In addition, the material also has strong water absorption and oxygen permeability.
