Color management technology helps copy artwork

Color management technology is well known in the fields of imaging, printing (traditional/digital) and is widely used in actual production. The premise of copying artwork is to solve the problem of correctly transferring and maintaining color from the entire copying process of shooting/scanning, display, output (printing or digital output). Therefore, color management technology plays a very important role in the reproduction of artworks.

Scanning and shooting

Regardless of the genre of painting and calligraphy works, the first step in copying is to digitally collect the original work. If the traditional film is used in the early stage, the scanning equipment suitable for digital acquisition includes electric extension, roller scanner, negative film scanner and high-end flatbed scanner. In the process of electricity or scanning, the means and tools of color management are needed. For example, when shooting, use the grayscale card or ColorChecker24 color card as a reference standard to provide calibration data reference for scanning and electric separation. If the power distribution or scanning device supports the ICC color management function, it is necessary to establish an input color ICC profile for the scanning device. This will have a multiplier effect, which not only contributes to the restoration of color and level, but also greatly reduces the technical experience of the operator and saves time. The collection of color characteristics (ICC) of the above devices is commonly used by X-Rite's color management software ProfileMaker or MonacoProfiler and Kodak transmission standard positive film (120/135 specifications), and is compatible with the hardware's own scanning software.

If you are scanning the original work directly. Devices that can be used include large format flatbed scanners, wide format scanners, and the like. Most of these digital devices support color management, from color temperature and intensity distribution correction to ICC color characteristics, as well as ProfilerMaker/MonacoProfiler software, as well as Kodak IT8 color cards, Monaco IT8 color cards, or HuchColor color cards.

The equipment and requirements involved in digital photography are relatively complicated. The equipment in digital shooting includes a scanning photographic platform based on linear array CCD. The light source conditions of the device are mainly continuous light sources, and the light source conditions are relatively stable. The digital back CCD/CMOS based digital back or High-end SLR digital cameras need to be equipped with different specifications and quantity of light boxes. The color temperature of the light boxes should be around 5000K ~ 5500K, and the color rendering index is above 95%. (Color temperature, brightness and color rendering index can be passed through X-Rite software. I1Sha re and hardware i1Pro spectrophotometer measurements are taken). After the shooting environment is stable and the illumination is even, the ColorChecker white balance card or gray balance can be used to adjust the color temperature before shooting. Then the SG color card is used to record the color performance of the shooting system, and the shooting system is analyzed by ProfileMaker software. ICC profile.

Display and proofreading

After completing the digital collection of the artwork, it is necessary to judge the color and level through the cooperation of the display and the application. The display color gamut should be as large as possible. It is best to achieve or exceed Adobe RGB1998. The gamma value is accurately adjustable, and the RGB three primary colors can be independently corrected to achieve the correct white balance. Of course, to achieve accurate color performance of the display, it is also necessary to do regular standardized corrections, which can be corrected using ProfilerMaker software and i1 spectrometer. Ei zo's CG/CE series monitors also support hard calibration of the monitor. The included color correction software ColorNavigator is compatible with the i1 spectrometer for one-button calibration, which is extremely convenient without manual adjustment. The calibration of display and output requires the cooperation of standard light source box. The color temperature of common standard light source box is 6500K or 5000K for reflective light source and 5000K for transmitted light source. The color rendering index is above 95%, and it is better to have independent brightness adjustment function.

Output device and control

When the display is able to correctly display the color of the artwork, the next step is to control the output device to achieve the same color as the original on the appropriate media. Today's mainstream inkjet output devices are large-format color inkjet printers from Canon, Epson, and HP. The RIP software can correctly control the devices of the above brands to achieve ideal color output. Among them, RIP software and color management equipment are very important to standardize the ink volume and linearization control of the inkjet printers of the above brands. Then use Profi leMaker and spectrophotometer to measure and generate ICC color profiles for different print media. Complete color calibration of the printing device and establish a reference for the display proof.

If we can master the color management technology on the necessary hardware and have a good understanding and grasp of the artistic style of the copied works, we can do a good job of copying the artwork.
