Japan intends to strengthen environmental protection testing for green shopping products

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan has decided to start environmental testing in 4-5 kinds of commodities involved in the “Green Shopping Act” from April 2009, in order to investigate whether they have reached environmental standards.

According to reports by Japanese media on the 23rd, the "Green Shopping Act" has formulated various environmental protection standards for 18 categories of 237 kinds of products such as paper, stationery, home appliances, and automobiles, such as the use of recycled paper and other raw materials for the production of certain products. The proportion and the amount of energy consumed are clearly defined. This law stipulates that government departments at all levels are obliged to purchase environmentally friendly products that meet environmental standards. However, whether or not the commodities are actually up to standard is currently based on the manufacturer’s own declaration. Due to the false declaration of some enterprises or difficult to understand environmental protection labels, the Japanese government decided to thoroughly investigate the so-called environmental protection products.

According to reports, the Ministry of the Environment of the People's Republic of China will carry out environmental inspections on dozens of commodities such as paper and plastics that may have counterfeiting problems. If any manufacturers are found to be fraudulent, relevant government departments will intervene to investigate. However, the Ministry of the Environment did not propose punitive measures against companies that violated the regulations. Whether this measure will be effective or not is unknown.
