ConAgra Foods uses recycled plastic packaging for frozen meat

ConAgra Foods announced that it will be the first company in North America to use post-consumer recycled plastics to cool meat products, which will incorporate approximately 8 million pounds of plastics from waste dumps into the recycling process.

ConAgra Foods has begun using 30% to 40% post-consumer recycled plastics in its frozen meat products such as HealthyChoice®, Banquet®, KidCuisine® and MarieCallender's® products. Most Other companies use crystallized PET plastic for frozen meat products, which is only possible with newly manufactured plastics and requires more energy and resources to produce. ConAgra Foods is the only company in North America that uses post-consumer recycled plastics in frozen meat products.

Post-consumer recycled plastics are often sent directly to landfills, such as plastic bottles. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, only about 30% of plastic soda bottles are recycled each year. Through these new meat products, ConAgra will use at least 8 million pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic annually.

By introducing recycled plastics into its frozen meat products, ConAgra Foods will:

Eliminate about 8 million pounds of plastic that would have been discarded into the garbage dump, which is equivalent to producing 128 million 20-ounce plastic bottles per year. Saving 236 million BTUs of energy, which is enough for an ordinary American family to use for one year in 2593. The reduction of 15,200 tons of CO2 emissions will degrade the greenhouse effect, which is equivalent to the reduction of 2,000 cars per year.
