Paper Mate Packs Make New Pens Stand Out

The shape of the packaging is increasingly used to distinguish between different brands. When the product is a linear structure, Sanford North America has found a way to use the shape of the package by category.

The company launched its new Paper Mate FlexGrip Elite pen, which is packaged in categories. Traditionally, the packaging is very similar, and most pens are packed in regular blister packs. The text is placed along the edge of the package so that it can be as large as possible on narrow packaging.
To be different, the packaging of the FlexGrip Elite pen must have new features. At the same time it also highlights the soft feel and antibacterial function of the pen.

Packaging techniques: The main packaging of the product is a PE blister card that can hold two, three or four pens. There are also PVC folding boxes that can hold 12 or 15 pens. The packaging was designed by Anthem Worldwide, a professional design company with eight offices in North America.

In terms of structure, Anthem designed a series of blister packs to display the built-in pens in a small fan array. To achieve this goal, the blister is also designed to be fan-shaped, with only one pen per cell in the blister.

This new type of packaging is not the same as most other similar blister packs. The latter are usually rectangular and the direction of the pen is straight up and down. “We created a distinctive form,” explained Scott Crist, Assistant Brand Manager for Paper Mate Products. “It gives us recognition in our products.” Tim Weiner, accounting manager at Anthem Design, said that this look also adds a sense of elegance to pens and packaging.

This blister pack also has other functions. Each blister has a die-cut hole at its center. The buyer can touch the pen inside to experience FlexGrip's soft surface. In order to introduce the new FlexGrip Elite brand, each blister pack also has a medal-shaped place that can be labeled with company logos and brand information. This medallion area can arrange words horizontally, and the packaging of other similar products is usually vertical text.

On the label and blister-packed cardboard, spot colors are also used to achieve special graphic effects. On the label, this spot color is an appropriate purple color that adds to the elegance of the design. In addition, on the cardboard, brilliant blue was used to create an "iron blue" effect, increasing shelf impact.

Paper Mate series also has two different sizes of PVC boxes. It explains how packagers should meet the needs of retailers. A PVC box can hold 12 pens, and the other can hold 15 sticks. The reason why such a larger box is needed is because a retailer wants to launch a “buy 12 get 3” promotion.

The crayfish packaging of Crayola's color subtle toy package can stand on the shelf.

Fingerpaint toy bag with independent function
Packaging suppliers must not only develop special packaging for special sales channels, they also increasingly have to develop specialized packaging for specific retailers. This is exactly the challenge faced by Binney & Smith for its “Crayola Color Mystery” toy bag, which is exclusively for Toy "R" Us toy stores.

“Usually, we use transparent wrapper with holes to wrap our products for hanging displays,” said Mark Clarizio of Binney & Smith, “but Toys`R`Us wants a stand-alone product Packaging. We also want a package that allows shoppers to see the product and know how to use it."

Color Mystery Series is an innovation in color toys. It is a "dirty" product that does not soil walls, furniture and all other places where children may smear. The principle is because the product uses a special marker and paper, and only when the two interact, will the color appear.

The packaging of this product not only adds a feature to the market for color products, it also introduces a new product for the "Color Odyssey" series - "anti-dirty" pigmented fingers. Its working principle is very similar to the above-mentioned marker pen. After the children use their fingers to paint the paint and apply it on a special paper, colors will appear. If they smear on the surface of other items, they will not show color and will not cause mess.

"We need to show this feature on the package to highlight it," Clarizio said. Customers need to see all the components and descriptions of how this product works to understand the advancements of this new product.

Packaging Technique: It is a structure that resembles a clam shell. It has a small box with 6 markers, a 6-color finger paint plate, and two special paper books. Imitation oyster shell packaging is made of PVC thermoformed and supplied by Alloyd. Its design allows each component to remain in a fixed position, both to display the product and to reflect the advantages of the product.

An important aspect of the clam-shell packaging design is the thermoforming of the “foot seat” on the bottom, which allows the packaging to stand firm on the shelf, which is specifically requested by Toys ʻR` Us.

The front of the back of the paper card is printed by Strine Printing Company with four colors, further increasing the impact of the shelf. The back of the paper card is printed in black and white and printed with instructions on how to use this product, which is very important for new products.

Honolulu's transport box with holograms can protect product quality and enhance brand image.

Holographic image packaging improves the quality of fish products
Honolulu Fish’s hologram pattern on the shipping box helped it solve two challenges when it came to selling fresh fish products: The first challenge was to establish the brand identity; the second was airlifted from Hawaii to the United States. Keep as fresh as possible during the process.

Packing Tips: The company mainly supplies salmon and other seafood products from Hawaii to high-end restaurants in the United States. It uses a 1-inch thick polystyrene insulation in the corrugated box. Fish products are packed in argon-filled foil bags. The product's initial temperature is 33 degrees Fahrenheit (equivalent to 1.8 degrees Celsius - the editor), and the frozen gel helps the product maintain a sufficiently low temperature to achieve a 48-hour shelf life.

With the help of an unusual packaging technique, Honolulu’s corrugated boxes are compounded with a layer of paper with a hologram. This hologram enhances the brand image and helps protect the quality of the product.

"We developed this package based on our commitment to quality," explains Wayne Samiere, president of the company. He hopes that the surface of the transport box can reflect the sunlight shining on the box, because sometimes the transport box may be exposed to the sun while waiting to be loaded onto the plane.

"We tried aluminum foil, but it didn't reflect enough energy," Samiere continued. "Then we tried a hologram that reflected 98% of the sun."

Weyerhaeuser is responsible for merging the holograms provided by Proma Technologies into a corrugated box. With a protective approach, Samiere faced the second question: How to decorate corrugated boxes? He believes that packaging needs to establish a good brand image among chefs who use this product.

The answer is to create a special hologram pattern. Many holographic images are simple, dazzling, repeating patterns. However, the special hologram is a specially designed image, which includes the company's logo, address, telephone, fax, web site, and E-mail. In addition, it also shows fish patterns to enhance the company's product features.

According to Samiere, from the standpoint of brand strategy, this technique is very successful. “We got a lot of good reviews from restaurants, and we also heard about chefs fighting for who should keep the box,” he said.
