The formaldehyde in the furniture has become a "difficult". Is the formaldehyde exceeding the standard "no solution"?

Excessive formaldehyde has become a "difficult problem" in the furniture industry. The latest inspection by the Guangzhou Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau shows that nearly half of the furniture inspections are unqualified, of which more than 30% of the formaldehyde exceeds the standard. Why is the problem of “formaldehyde exceeding the standard” repeatedly prohibited?

Sancheng furniture formaldehyde exceeds the standard

On April 13, the reporter found from the latest test report issued by the Guangzhou Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau that the quality of furniture in the Guangzhou market is still not optimistic.

A “Product Quality Supervision and Inspection of the Fourth Quarter of 2010” issued by the Bureau showed that in the fourth quarter of 2010, the Guangzhou Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau focused on quality supervision of 29 products (excluding food) such as household appliances and furniture. In the spot check, among the 43 batches of products examined, the pass rate of the tested physical quality was only 55.8%, of which 6 batches (accounting for 25% of the total unqualified) exceeded the standard formaldehyde emission of panel furniture.

According to the reporter's calculation, in the products that are not tested, formaldehyde exceeds 30%. Guangzhou Quality Supervision Bureau said that the main reason for the excessive formaldehyde is that the manufacturers used unqualified wood-based panels and inferior adhesives to reduce costs.

Director Liao of the National Furniture Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center said that China's furniture products have rarely used solid wood, and most of the panel furniture is bonded by fiberboard or particleboard, so that when facing and sealing. Adhesives are used, and the adhesive is the source of formaldehyde.

Testing standards to be corrected

Xiong Xiaokun, a light industry researcher at China Investment Consulting, believes that compared with the relevant US standards, China's testing standards for formaldehyde emission from furniture are relatively loose.

At present, the most stringent detection of formaldehyde emission from furniture is in the United States. In 2009, the United States introduced the "CARB Regulations", in which the detailed production and sales of formaldehyde-containing products were detailed. The detection of furniture products penetrated into the production and circulation of furniture products. Routine, not just routine inspections of finished furniture.

Director Liao said that China's formaldehyde content testing of furniture is still following the GBGB18584-200 standard introduced in 2001. In this standard, the regulation for formaldehyde emission is not more than 1.5mg/L. In addition, there are big differences between China and the United States in terms of detection methods.

Director Liao revealed that the current domestic inspection of furniture products is based on the "dryer method", while the United States uses the "environmental test warehouse method."

The difference between the two methods is that the environmental test chamber method is to collect the gas in the environmental chamber without destroying the furniture product as a whole, and does not damage the structure of the furniture during the inspection process, and the detection method is the largest. The advantage is that the detection process is to simulate the use environment of the furniture, which is in line with the reality.

The “dryer method” currently used in China is to cut furniture into small pieces for testing. It is a destructive test. This test method not only has a considerable cost, but also differs from the reality of furniture use.

Xiong Xiaokun also believes that there is a big gap between China's current standards and testing methods compared with the United States. In addition, in terms of the development of China's furniture industry, there is currently no such thing as furniture production and circulation in the United States. All are tested one by one.

This situation may be improved in the near future. Director Liao revealed that the National Standards Committee had already issued opinions on the revision of the furniture testing standards, and the revision work is underway. He also said that the industry is more inclined to adopt similar US testing standards.

Why are you repeatedly prohibited?

"Formaldehyde exceeds the standard" has almost become a "dysentery" in the Chinese furniture industry, and has been repeatedly mentioned, but it has still not changed. In the eyes of the industry, the formaldehyde content of furniture products can hardly be eliminated. Director Liao expressed a similar point: In his view, in addition to the state's testing standards for formaldehyde content in furniture, some companies have an unshirkable responsibility for process control and glue selection.

Xiong Xiaokun believes that the reason why formaldehyde exceeds the standard in the industry is mainly because the furniture market in China is mostly occupied by small enterprises, while small enterprises have weak control ability in product standards such as raw materials and finished products inspection. Plates and inferior adhesives to reduce the cost of their enterprises. In addition, there are certain loopholes in the testing process of relevant departments in China, which is one of the reasons for enterprises to take unqualified raw materials.

Is formaldehyde exceeding the standard "no solution"?

I am afraid that it is not the responsibility of any party to alleviate this problem.

In this regard, Xiong Xiaokun said that China's quality supervision departments should trace the traces of products, strictly control the products from production, circulation and sales, and conduct one-by-one inspection of each batch of products to ensure that formaldehyde-excess products cannot enter the market; Furniture companies should also be strict with themselves. The purchased furniture materials should meet the national standards. At the same time, enterprises should strengthen the re-inspection of the purchased raw materials to avoid the use of unqualified raw materials.
